SUBJECT MATTER of Commandment #2
The Second Commandment is about HOW to worship the true God. The true God does NOT want the use of visual aids in His worship service. Physical objects misrepresent Him and block a spiritual relationship from developing.
It is NOT the same subject matter as Commandment #1, which only defines WHO the true God is... the unique being that delivered them from Egypt.
Commandment #3 is about WHAT God is, as His Name reveals His office and character as the only almighty and eternal being that deserves great respect and awe... and that our behavior as His people should not besmirch that Name.
Commandment #4 is about WHEN God is to be worshiped, and WHY... because it is a memorial of His 6 days of creation work that identifies Him, and Who rested on the 7th day as our example to follow so we would always remember and connect to our Creator by keeping this 7-day weekly cycle.
These first four Commandments are about man's relationship with God. The last six are about man's relationship with other men & women. This is the only grouping that is endorsed by the Scriptures (Mt 22:35-40).
See attached supporting material excerpted from the booklet by Roderick C. Meredith entitled "The Ten Commandments".
Notice especially the highlighted portions in this excerpt about Commandment #2. By diminishing or annulling the importance of Commandment #2's instructions on HOW to worship the true God, it appears that we automatically become blinded to its direct connection to the the Seven Annual Holydays defined in Leviticus 23 as a further extension of HOW to worship the true God, in spirit and in truth. Keeping the Holydays reveals the spirit and truth of God's 7,000 year plan for mankind's salvation!
Likewise, by diminishing or annulling the importance of Commandment #4's instructions on WHEN to worship the true God on the 7th day of the weekly cycle, it appears that we automatically become blinded to its direct connection to the the Seven Annual Holydays defined in Leviticus 23 as a further extension of WHEN to worship the true God, at the "appointed times" that occur three times a year (Ex 23:14-17; 34:18-23; Deut 16:1-16). And these Holydays will be enforced upon all nations when Christ returns (Zech 14:16-19)!
Read Mt 5:17-19 to see Christ's warning about diminishing or annulling the importance of any of the Commandments of God.
This warning reveals the importance of the SUBJECT MATTER of each of the Ten Commandments.
The SUBJECT MATTER of Commandments #2 and #4 are especially important, as these two commandments directly lead us to the observance of the Seven Annual Holydays which teach us HOW and WHEN to worship God in spirit and in truth (Jn 4:24)!
Isa 8:20 "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn."
